When introducing a new concept or rule, there are

When introducing a new concept or rule, there are a few steps we can take to make sure we are effective and successful. These four steps are:

1. Introduce the rule
It is really important to be as succinct as we can when providing the definition of a rule and make sure we use “student-friendly” language (i.e. using language that is easy to understand and using known words). This also helps students internalise and remember the rule.

2. Illustrate the rule with examples and non-examples
Using both examples and non-examples helps students learn when the rule applies and when it does not. When you are illustrating the rule, you are modelling how to apply the rule. This is also known as “I do it.”

3. Guide and support students in analysing examples and non-examples
Once you have modelled how to use a rule, you can then support students in identifying the rule and analysing examples and non-examples together. This is also known as “We do it.”

4. Check students understanding using examples and non-examples
The last step is reducing your supports and scaffolds to see if students can apply the rule independently. This is also known as “You do it.”

The example we have included on the second slide is when we are teaching that there are two types of letters. We find that this is an important concept that we need to teach a lot of our clients, as it is a prerequisite skill when learning other spelling rules (e.g. long vowel rule, double or not rule).

When we are working on Segmenting and Blending (sounding out words), one of the ways we can support our clients is making sure we choose the most suitable materials. Our end goal is to use word sheets, as we can get the most practise with these materials. If needed, we do use other materials along the way to provide scaffolds and supports to help our clients reach this goal.

The purpose of scaffolding in both construction and teaching is the same: it allows people to do a task that could not be completed without using it at first.

When we are teaching new reading and writing skills, we need to make sure we have the right supports and scaffolds in place so children experience success. As their accuracy with the skill improves, we need to reduce supports until they are able to complete the skill on their own. Children will let us know if we have reduced scaffolds too quickly (i.e. if they make a lot of mistakes or have trouble remembering how to do something).

How do you record the progress your clients make in each session?

We call these our "data sheets." Following an initial consultation and assessment, we figure out which areas we are going to target first and the starting point for each. We then create a data sheet to help monitor a child's progress and structure our sessions. Our team have a love/hate relationship with excel when creating these!! Lucky we have our templates to help! 🙂
